When I first mentioned the name Bandon Dunes my husband's ears perked up. Being the wife of a golfer I should have known why, unfortunately I was clueless as he started to explain what Bandon Dunes golf course was.
The Bandon Dunes I was looking at was a big dark bay gelding who came off the track 3 months ago from a barn who loved him. He has displayed the qualities of a gentleman in his foster home at the Kentucky branch of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program. His profile reads like the OTTB's I love only a little easier. Easier is something I am all too ready for.
Bandon is 5 years old and had bowed tendons early in his racing career. He was properly rehabilitated and raced again. His sire is Mr Greeley, with Secretariat, Native Dancer, and Mr Prospector on top and bottom.
I spoke at length with the person in charge of his care and she agreed that Bandon seemed like a really nice fit for us. We began the application process anticipating it would take at least the 2 weeks typical of these type things. Within 24 hours all of the bases were covered as my wonderful friends and vet took the time to be sure that they weighed-in on my ability, our facility, and vouched for us being a great home for an OTTB.
It's bittersweet. Giving him a home means another horse can leave the track to take his place at New Vocations and the circle continues though so I am focusing on the good. We are expecting him to arrive this weekend or next week.
